Welcome to my corner of the internet — where technology meets creativity, and ideas drive impact.
I’m Bernard Kioko, better known as Bkay, a self-taught software developer, serial entrepreneur, and cultural advocate with a deep-rooted passion for innovation, justice, and creative expression in Africa.
I’m the founder and CEO of Bernsoft Group, a leading software development conglomerate in Kenya. My journey in tech started from humble beginnings and has since evolved into a career that bridges multiple sectors. I’ve had the privilege of building systems that power some of Kenya’s most widely used digital services — from developing the M-PESA merchant integration interface to creating the SMS ticker systems for major TV stations across the country. I was also part of the team that developed Kenya’s Credit Reporting system, which laid the foundation for digital financial trust in the region.
Beyond software, I’m deeply immersed in the creative and music industries. As an executive producer and record label executive, I’ve helped shape and distribute African music while championing the rights of creators. I currently serve as the Chairman of the Music Publishers Association of Kenya, which is affiliated with the International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP) — a global body advocating for the rights of music publishers and creators.
Education and mentorship have always been close to my heart. A proud alumnus of Starehe Boys’ Centre, I was also the founding tutor at the JKUAT-MMS IT Centre, which later evolved into the JKUAT IT Department — a testament to how small initiatives can grow into national institutions.
My work has taken me from radio booths at Capital FM to advisory roles in governance. I’ve consulted for leading media houses including Nation TV, KTN, and KBC, and I currently serve as the Creative Economy Adviser to the Nairobi Governor and Secretary General of the Creative Society of Kenya — roles that allow me to influence policy, drive innovation, and fight for creators’ economic rights.
This blog is a space where I’ll share my perspectives across technology, business, entertainment, and governance — the pillars that have defined my life’s work. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, policy thinker, creative professional, or just someone curious about the future of Africa, I hope you’ll find value here.
