U.S.-Kenya Creative Economy Forum 2025: Unlocking Opportunities for Kenya’s Creative Sector

Date: June 5, 2025
Location: Emara Ole-Sereni, Nairobi

The inaugural U.S.-Kenya Creative Economy Forum convened a diverse group of stakeholders, including creative entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and industry leaders, to explore avenues for collaboration and investment in Kenya’s burgeoning creative sector.

Empowering Kenya’s Creative Industries

Under the theme “Powering the Future of the Creative Economy”, the forum emphasized the Kenyan government’s ambition to double the creative economy’s contribution to GDP from 5% to 10% by the end of 2025. This goal is supported by a young, tech-savvy population and initiatives like the Konza Technopolis and the establishment of a Digital Media City, aimed at fostering innovation and providing infrastructure for content creators.

Key Highlights

  • Film Industry: Kenya’s film sector, often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa,” offers low production costs and diverse talent, presenting opportunities for American film companies to invest and collaborate.
  • Music Sector: The vibrant music scene provides access to local and pan-African markets, attracting interest from U.S. record labels and streaming platforms.
  • Sports Industry: Kenya’s rich sports culture opens doors for American sports franchises and organizations to establish a presence in Africa.

Strategic Partnerships and Commitments

Marc Dillard, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya, highlighted the potential for growth, stating, “Kenya’s creative industries already contribute at least five percent to the country’s GDP. With the right focus on innovation, talent, and business engagement, this can grow significantly.”

Maxwell Okello, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce Kenya (AmCham Kenya), announced the formation of a task force to support ongoing U.S.-Kenya creative partnerships, emphasizing the goal of building a creative economy that is mainstream, investable, and scalable.

Looking Ahead

The forum serves as a catalyst for continued engagement between the U.S. and Kenya in the creative sector. With favorable policies and access to East Africa’s 300 million consumers, Kenya’s creative industry offers American companies a gateway to profitable partnerships and shared economic growth.
